Maurten Gel100 Caffeine Energy Gel
Imagine a product that combines hydrogel technology, carbohydrates and caffeine.
Well, now it's here.
Caffeine tastes bitter. The sports nutrition industry has traditionally tried to hide the bitterness in gels by adding flavors and acid, or just having a low caffeine content. But added artificial flavors don't help you go faster. And you want plenty of caffeine. So we decided to get around the problem easily. Using our Hydrogel technology, we built a biopolymer matrix dense enough to encapsulate both the caffeine and carbohydrate mixture. The result: GEL 100 CAF 100 - a true GEL with low bitterness, low sweetness, effective caffeine content and plenty of energy.
Once again, it is a world first.
The GEL 100 CAF 100 contains 100 mg of caffeine - that's the equivalent of 1.5 espressos - or a cup of brewed coffee. That's a lot, compared to many of the traditional gels out there. It delivers 25 grams of carbohydrates through a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8: 1) that allows intakes of up to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour. It has a high weight to energy ratio and contains no added flavors, preservatives or dyes. Like all our products, it is vegan friendly.
Use the GEL 100 CAF 100 alone during shorter runs, or combine it with other Maurten products to ensure you have enough energy during your session.
WHY CAFFEINE?
Caffeine has been shown to increase alertness and reduce perceived exertion. These are properties that can be beneficial in sports performance. The GEL 100 CAF 100 can be used to build caffeine levels - on its own, along with regular coffee - or to achieve adequate caffeine levels during activity.
AMOUNT OF ENERGY
Studies have shown that our bodies can use up to 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour. Recent science has shown that the 0.8: 1 fructose to glucose ratio allows even greater absorption - up to 100 grams per hour. The GEL 100 was developed using this ratio and packs a lot of energy. One serving contains 25 grams of carbohydrates.

GEL 100 CAF 100 - INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The reaction to caffeine is highly individual, from highly ergogenic to ergolytic
- The effectiveness of caffeine is dose-dependent
- Response to caffeine is highly individual
- The effective dose is variable and unpredictable
- More is not always better
Developing a nutrition strategy for races or key sessions is complex. Everyone is different - and the absorption and metabolization of caffeine varies from person to person. There are two main factors to consider: your body weight and if you are accustomed to caffeine. Science suggests an intake of 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight to improve performance. But again, it's very individual. We have developed some general guidelines for using the GEL 100 CAF 100, based on our own findings and scientific literature.
DURATION <1 HOUR For this strategy requires 1 serving of GEL 100 CAF 100.
BEFORE: A favorable caffeine level can be achieved by consuming approximately 200 mg prior to the activity. This can be achieved by drinking one cup of coffee, in the hours leading up to the event, and one GEL 100 CAF 100 during your warm-up. You could achieve the level of caffeine by consuming two GEL 100 CAF 100, but the total amount of carbohydrates is a bit excessive for a short event.
DURATION <2 HOURS This strategy would require 2-3 servings of GEL 100 CAF 100.
BEFORE: Aim to consume 200 mg of caffeine prior to activity. That translates into consuming two GEL 100 CAF 100. For an event that lasts about two hours, having two GEL 100 CAF 100 is a convenient way to build up caffeine levels - and replenish carbohydrate levels at the same time. Remember that one GEL 100 CAF 100 packs 25 grams of carbohydrates. TIME: consume another GEL 100 CAF 100 about thirty minutes after activity to ensure your caffeine levels are maintained. Don't forget to supplement your carbohydrates. Aim to consume 30-60 grams of carbohydrates every hour.
DURATION> 2 HOURS For this strategy is min 3 servings (depending on duration) of GEL 100 CAF 100.
BEFORE: Consume two GEL 100 CAF 100 during the hours prior to the event. Then you will have reached an intake of 200 mg of caffeine and 50 grams of carbohydrates. DURING: consume another GEL 100 CAF 100 about thirty minutes after the activity to ensure that your caffeine levels are maintained. Try to consume one GEL 100 CAF 100 every second hour to maintain caffeine levels. Remember to supplement carbohydrates - either by consuming the GEL 100, Drink Mix 160 or Drink Mix 320. It is ambitious, but aim for an intake of about 60 - 90 grams of carbohydrates per hour.
Remember, these guidelines are simplified and should only be used as a rule of thumb. Caffeine is not for everyone. Consult a doctor if you are in doubt or pregnant. And remember that there is no point in increasing your caffeine intake. You can never compensate for training, and overconsumption won't help you.
